Russian scientists have obtained first ice samples from Lake Vostok, a huge body of liquid water buried under the Antarctic ice. The scientists presume that the ice from the lake may have special physical characteristics. Lake Vostok is considered to be the largest of several hundreds of reservoirs located under the Antarctic ice. With an area of 15,000 square km it is slightly smaller that Ladoga Lake in Russia, which is considered to be the largest in Europe. For millions of years Lake Vostok was isolated from earth atmosphere. The thickness of the ice layer above the lake varies between 3,700 up and 4,200 meters. On January 10, the members of the Antarctic expedition received first ice samples from that lake.

President Pranab Mukherjee inaugurated the three-day World Telugu Conference in Tirupati. Mr. Mukherjee said Telugu was one of the oldest classical languages of India. According to legend, Lord Shiva descended as linga on three mountains, Kaleswara, Srisaila and Bhimeswara, dotting the Telugu region. Experts believe that Telugu was split from Proto-Dravidian languages between 1500 and 1000 BC.
