Recently, the Shell Helen Keller awards are given away by External Affairs Minister Salman Khursheed to the people and institutions in service of differently abled persons.The Awards ceremony held in New Delhi on the eve of the World’s Disability Day saw individuals with disability being recognised for their achievements in their field of work. Hearing-impaired Sangeeta Gala, who trained actor Ranbir Kapoor for ‘Barfi’ and has worked with noted film-makers like Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Mani Ratnam, was honoured for being a role model for people with disability. Other awardees included physically challenged Abdul Sajeed Ali for his efforts in ensuring work for disabled people under MNREGA in Andhra Pradesh; Radhika Chand, a painter and teacher with Down syndrome, and Ketan Kothari, who has facilitated access to printed words to visually impaired. In the ‘Role Model Non-Disabled Individuals’ category, the awardees were Ishita Sanyal for promoting employment of mentally-ill people and R. Hari for making his Lemon Tree Hotels an inclusive workplace.

26. Recently, the status of Palestine in UN is upgraded to ___________?

The UN General Assembly has voted in favour of granting the upgraded status of Observer state to Palestine on the lines of Vatican. India was among the 138 countries which voted in favour of the resolution while there were nine votes against the move led by US and Israel. 41 countries abstained from the voting. The change in status from Observer entity to Observer State means Palestinians can now co-sponsor the resolutions at UN. They can access membership of additional UN bodies like the International Criminal Court where they can try to put Israel on war crime charges. The Palestinians believe that the upgraded status would also help their claims for an independent state in the West Bank, Gaza Strip and East Jerusalem which was captured by Israel in the 1967.

INDRA, joint military exercise with Russia, is held in Mumbai from November 28 to December 3.Destroyer Marshal Shaposhnikov, replenishment oiler Irkut and rescue tug Alatau of the Russian Federation’s Navy Pacific Fleet (PF) Task Unit and India’s INS Mysore and INS Tabar are participating in the exercise.INDRA began in year 2003 and is being conducted every two years. The main objective of this exercise is to enhance interoperability, which will be useful if both the navies are working against the common threat like the pirates in the Gulf of Aden. It will be helpful for wider cooperation and mutual understanding between two navies. The navies will work on communication between ships, sending signals and guarding civil ships from pirate attacks. It also involves live firing drills, air defence and anti- submarine exercises.

According Planning Commission’s latest report on state finances, Haryana mopped up 64,123 crore rupees during the five year policy period which was 192 per cent of the targeted resource mobilisation in the 11th Plan. The report indicates that majority of states have failed to meet the projected planned resources as collectively they could fetch only 92.5 per cent of target. About eight states in the country including Haryana, Assam, Odisha, Karnataka, Goa, Bihar and Arunachal Pradesh could mop up more than their targets.
