Recently Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso announced their withdrawal from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). The three countries accused ECOWAS of imposing “illegitimate, inhumane and irresponsible” sanctions against them after their forces seized power in a recent coup. Border restrictions limiting movement and trade have harmed countries' economies. The withdrawal of the three countries could weaken the regional grouping and increase tensions.

Board of Control for Cricket in India Secretary Jay Shah has been elected as the President of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) for the third time. Established in 2017, the reserve protects the Bugun leocichla, a critically endangered passerine bird, named after the Bugun community. The Buguns, an indigenous group of approximately 2,000 people, inhabit 12 villages adjacent to Eaglenest. Community reserves, introduced in India's Wildlife Protection Act, act as important buffers, connectors and migration corridors between national parks and forests, thereby ensuring biodiversity conservation.

NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL) has entered into an agreement with the Government of Maharashtra for the development of green hydrogen and derivatives (green ammonia, green methanol) up to 1 million tonne per annum capacity. This agreement has been made for the next five years and investment of approximately ₹ 80,000 crore will be made.

Recently the Irrigation Department has started the third phase trial for the Pazhassi Irrigation Project, which aims to restore the water supply that has been disrupted since 2008. The canal shutters will open at 9:00 am on January 31, covering the renovated main canal and Mahi branch canal. The test assesses the condition of the canal, emphasizing public awareness to avoid specified sections while releasing water. Cooperation has been sought from local authorities, voluntary organizations and residents. A Vigilance Committee will address the concerns while ensuring collective accountability for the success of the project.
