Coding and Decoding Reasoning Tricks with Examples for Competitive Exams

Coding-Decoding: It is a method of representing any word in specific coded language. i.e to representing something by some other symbol or sign.

The question based on coding-decoding be asked in various ways, which are explained below in the following examples

(I). Writing the code for word in some other word: In this type of coding, a word is mentioned by some other word & the final situation is found. Then the code asked for the given word is found from the string.

Ex.1. If ‘thief’ is called ‘constable’, ‘constable’ is called ‘decoit’, ‘decoit’ is called ‘judge’, ‘judge’ is called ‘robber’, ‘robber’ is called ‘lawyer’ & ‘lawyer’ is called ‘teacher’, then who will give the judgment in the court?

(A) Judge

(B) Robber

(C) Decoit

(D) Teacher

Explanation :

Ans (B) : The robber will give the judgment in court.

We have shown earlier that the actual name coded with some other name. Here, the judge coded as the robber. So, our answer will be the code for judge, which is robber.

Ex.2. If ‘rain’ is called ‘pink’, ’pink’ is called ‘cloud’, ‘cloud’ is called ‘water’, ‘water’ is called ‘bridge’, what will you drink when you are thirsty?

(A) Cloud

 (B) Water

 (C) Bridge

(D) Pink

Explanation :

Ans (C) : ‘Bridge’ will be drunk when we feel thirst, because water is called as bridge in his code language.

Ex.3. If code for ‘green pink dress’ is ‘skw nip xtp’ & code for ‘beautiful cotton dress’ is ‘mbv xtp rib’ & code for ‘beautiful pink button’ is ‘tsu rib skw’, then what is mentioned by ‘mbv’?

(A) pink

(B) cotton

(C) beautiful

(D) button

Explanation :

Ans (B) : green pink dress – skw nip xtp beautiful cotton dressmbv  xtp rib beautiful pink button – tsu rib skw

Here, the code for dress is xtp from the 1st & 2nd terms. Similarly, the code for beautiful is rib, which is found from terms 3 & 4. The remaining word in the 2nd term is cotton, for which its code is mbv.

(II). Writing a letter code in a word: In this type of coding, the sequence of any letter is written by increasing or decreasing it.

Ex.4. In a code language, PAWAN is written as QBXBO, then how JAMUN will be written in the same language?

Explanation :

Ans:              P A W A N    then    J A M U N

                +1 ↓  ↓   ↓  ↓ ↓       +1     ↓ ↓  ↓  ↓  ↓

                     Q B X B O                 K B  N V O

(III). To code a word using digits : In this method, the word is coded with a number by multiplying their sum according to the sequence of letters in the word or by finding the sum of sequence of letter numbers.

If you remember the sequence of English letters, you will be able to solve these types of question very quickly.

Ex.5. In a certain code language, LONDON is written as 1015441514, then how FAUSTO will be written?

(A) 10121452

(B) 6121192015

(C) 152019216

(D) 1467325

Explanation :

Ans: (B) Here, the letters of a given word are coded with their sequence no. in the alphabet.

J              O             N              D            O             N             F               A             U            S               T            O

10           15           14           4              15           14           6              1              21           19           20           15

(IV). Coding by column analysis: In these type of question, two columns are given. One column contains the words & the other contains the codes. The codes for letters are found by comparing both columns.

Direction: Some words are given in column I & the related keys are given in column II as shown below. It is necessary that the sequences of keys are according to the sequences of letters used in the words, but the key is according to the letter in the word. Study them carefully & answer the following question.

Column – I           Column – II

FLOUR                  xncap

TAP                        ksd

ROSE                     cmrn

SAIL                       kptm

Ex.6. Which letter is a code for E ?

(A) c

(B) m

(C) r

(D) n

Ex.7. Which letter is a code for L ?

(A) n

(B) c

 (C) k

(D) p

Ex.8. Which letter is a code for O ?

(A) x

(B) c

(C) m

(D) r

Ex.9. Which letter is a code for F ?

(A) p

(B) c

(C) a

(D) x

Ex.10. Which letter is a code for P ?

(A) k

(B) s

(C) c

(D) d

Explanation :

Ans:                      I                                               II

                                FLOUR                                  xncap     ---------------(i)

                                TAP                                        ksd         ----------------(ii)

                                ROSE                                     cmrn      -----------------(iii)

                                LOTUS                                   xsmcp   ------------------(iv)

                                SAIL                                       kptm     -------------------(v)

From (iii), (iv) & (v), S from column I & m from Column II are matching.

So, S = m

From (iii) & (iv) O = c

From (iv) & (v) S = m, L = P

From (ii) & (v) A = k

From (ii) & (iv) T = s, so, P = d

From (i) & (iii) R = n, so E = r

From (i) & (iv) U = x

When solving these types of question eliminate the letters from left & right using pencil & note their codes.

Ans.6. (C) as per the given conditions, E = r

Ans.7. (D) as per the given conditions, L = p

Ans.8. (B) as per the given conditions, O = c

Ans.9. (C) as per the given conditions, F = a

Ans.10. (D) as per the given conditions, P = d
