Spanish police and Europol have busted a global cyber-crime operation that infected millions of computers with a virus that falsely accused victims of viewing child pornography and demanded a fine payment. The virus locked computers in over 30 countries, mostly in Europe, and it demanded payment of a fine of 100 euros ($135) to return control to its user. Europol said in a statement that it was “the largest and most complex cyber-crime network dedicated to spreading police ransomware.”

Delhi has become the first State in the country to introduce the e-court fee system in all its six district courts. The new system was a web-based secure system that provided easy accessibility, faster processing, single court fee receipt of exact denomination irrespective of the amount and a unique e-court fee receipt number with bar code to ensure security of transactions. Besides, the system also provides facilities for verification and ‘locking facility’ to court officials.

Peruvian archaeologists have discovered a temple believed to be about 5,000 years old at the ancient El Paraiso archaeological site, in a valley just north of Lima. If the date is confirmed, it would be among the oldest sites in the world, comparable to the ancient city of Caral, a coastal city some 200 km to the north. The discovery, dubbed the Temple of Fire, was found in one of the wings of El Paraiso’s main pyramid. It includes a hearth that experts believe was used to burn ceremonial offerings.

In a bid to ensure a secure future for two of the most critically endangered birds—Great Indian bustard and Jerdon’s Courser – the Forest Department is launching ‘Special Recovery Plans’ from April this year. While the Rs.10-crore programme for Jerdon’s Courser is all set to begin soon, a similar proposal has been submitted to the Ministry for Environment and Forests for its approval for the Great Indian Bustard. Jerdon’s Courser, which is endemic to the Andhra Pradesh State, was believed to be extinct until it was rediscovered in 1986 near Reddipalli village, Kadapa district. It is categorised as “critically endangered” in the IUCN Red List, indicating that species is closest to extinction. There might be around 25 birds of this species and are found only in the Sri Lankamalleswara Wildlife Sanctuary (located in the same district) in the world.
