Time and Distance Problems with Solutions for Competitive Exams
Q.11. A train travels at an average of 50 miles per hour for hours and then travels at a speed of 70 miles per hours for hours. How far did the train travel in the entire 4 hours?
$$ Solution $$
$$ Total\ distance\ travelled \ = \left(50× 2{1\over2} \right)+ \left(70× 1{1\over2} \right)$$
$$ miles \ = (125+125) \ miles = 230 \ miles $$
Q.12. A man in a train notices that he can count 21 telephone posts in one minute. If they are known to be 50 metres apart, then at what speed is the train travelling?
$$ Solution $$
Number of gaps between 21 telephone posts = 20.
Distance travelled in 1 minute = (50 × 20) m = 1000 m = 1 km.
Q.13. Sound is said to travel in air at about 1100 feet per second. A man hears the axe striking the tree, second after he see it strike the tree. How fair is the man from the wood chopper?
$$ Solution $$
$$Distance =\left(11× {11\over5} \right) feet = 2420 $$
Q.14. An express train travelled at an average speed of 100 km/ hr, stopping for 3 minutes after every 75 km. How long did it take to reach its destination 600 km form the starting point?
$$ Solution $$
$$Time \ taken \ to \ cover \ 600\ km = \left({600\over100} \right)hrs =6 hrs. $$
$$ Number\ of \ stopagges = {600\over100}-1=7 $$
Total time of stoppages = (3 × 7) min = 21 min.
Hence, the total time taken = 6hrs 21 min.
Q.15. A certain distance is covered by a cyclist at a certain speed. If a jogger covers half the distance in double the time, the ratio of the speed of the jogger to that of the cyclist is :
$$ Solution $$
Let the distance covered by the cyclist be x and the time taken by y. $$ Then, Required \ ration = {{1\over2}\over2y}x : {x\over y} : = {1\over4} : 1 = 1 : 4$$
