IBPS PO Exam - Selection Process

IBPS PO Examination is the biggest banking examination of the year. The Examination opens the door for a decent job in the banking sector that can give you the job security and stability that you will cherish for the rest of the life. The IBPS PO Examination is conducted in three phases:

  • Preliminary Examination 
  • Mains Examination 
  • Interview 

What is the Exam Pattern?

The Preliminary Examination is the screening test in order to eliminate candidates from the mains examination. The marks received in this exam are not added in the final merit list. The Prelims Examination has the following sections:

  • English Language 
  • Reasoning Ability 
  • Numerical Ability 

After the Prelims Examinations, the selected candidates have to take the Mains Examination which is the actual test, the marks of which are added in the final merit list. The Mains Exam consists of the following sections:

  • English Language 
  • Reasoning Ability and Computer Awareness 
  • Data Interpretation 
  • General Awareness with Special Reference to Banking and Economy 
  • Descriptive English 

Once you clear the mains examination, you have to appear in the Interview conducted by the IBPS. 

IBPS PO: What is the Syllabus of the Exam?

English Language:

This is the trickiest section in the IBPS PO Examination since most of the candidates miss the bus because of this section. It is all the more important because it is there in both the prelims and the mains examination. There is also a descriptive test for English in this examination. Reasoning Ability

Reasoning is a very important section for IBPS PO Examination and it is there in both the Prelims and the Mains exam. This section demand rigorous practice since you will have to crack this section within the given time frame. It will require speed along with accuracy to score well in this section. The syllabus of this section includes:

  • Puzzles (Linear, Mixed, etc.)

Computer Awareness

The computer awareness section is mixed with the Reasoning section in the Mains examination. Nowadays, the questions from this chapter are also not only basic in nature but questions from complicated chapters are also asked in this section. Even calculation-based problems are asked these days in the exam. This section includes the following:

  • Memory of Computer – Primary and Secondary Memory

  • Computer Abbreviations

  • MS Office Package – MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint and MS Access 
  • Important Computer Terms (Fundamentals of Computers)
  • Operating System Of the Computers 
  • The Logic Gates Such As AND, OR, XOR Etc. and related Calculations Involving the Logic Gates 

Banking & Economy

The syllabus of this section includes the following:

  • Current Affairs (Events of the national and international importance of the last six months)
  • General Knowledge (Static GK such as countries and currencies, capitals, temples and airports, international organizations etc.)
  • Banking Awareness (History of banking in India, the structure of banking in India, important milestones in banking in India, important banking terms etc.)

English Language (Descriptive Paper)

This section is there in the Mains Examination and there are 25 marks allotted to this section with 2 questions asked in this part of the examination. You need to be conversant with the following topics:

  • Essay writing 
  • Précis writing
